10 Stress-Free Family & Child Session Tips

Whew chile, where do we even begin? I actually had to take a deep breath before writing this, because I KNOW just how stressful planning for picture day can be. *Cues all of the times I had to get ready for my own family’s picture day (or any picture day for that matter).

As with all families, it always seems like something’s bound to go wrong no matter how much you plan. Don’t get derailed and discouraged —HOPE is on the way!

Pedro and I have compiled ten of what we feel are the most important tips to help you and your family take the stress out of family picture day, and better prepare for your photo session.

  1. Plan to arrive to your family session at least 10-15 minutes early.
  2. Don’t forget to feed your child/children before the session (bonus if they’ve had a nap)
  3. Make sure you have a backup outfit for each child just in case,
  4. Don’t change your child/children into their session clothing until after they eat (seeing as though we have two littles of our own, we know how hard this can be)
  5. Only give them clear liquids once they are in their session clothing,
  6. Bring along their favorite toy or blanket, this will help them to feel comfortable during the session (it’s always smart to have a bribe in place such as fruit snacks, candy or a toy)
  7. Have a heart to heart with your child/children about the session and explain what’s going to happen,
  8. Talk to your significant other about the session, how the session will go and discuss what your expectations are,
  9. Outfits: remember to coordinate instead of matching & ensure all outfits are wrinkle-free. We’re not saying you have to starch them, but you can at least throw them in the dryer for a spin,
  10. A few days prior to your session, pack a bag filled with items you will possibly need on picture day: (snacks, props, wipes, hairbrush, emergency items, etc.)

3-for-1 combo BONUS TIP: Relax, have fun, and love on your family <3.

“That’s my mama!” | Mother’s Day Sessions

Have you ever felt like you weren’t good enough? Well I sure as heck have. In all honesty, I wasn’t even supposed to be the mom featured on our Mother’s Day promotion.

The truth is I had a mom already booked who I felt would be a much better “fit” than me. We were set to take photographs of she and her two beautiful daughters later this week, but I wanted to do some test photos for the set before she came.

So how did I end up in the photos? The answer is  simple —my husband and partner, Pedro. He said, “Don’t you want to get in some shots too?”. Each time he asked I told him no, slightly considering the thought more and more each time until I finally cracked. He suggested I wear one of our studio gowns. Then I pulled my hair up into the same hairstyle I’ve had a thousand times, and threw on some chapstick.

Seriously. That’s all that happened. So why was it so hard? I’m assuming the same reason moms all around the world have camera rolls of more than 1000 photos of their children, and only 20 of the photos include themselves. The number of snapshots of both them and their children pictured together is probably less than 10% of their camera roll. It’s hard because we’re not thinking of ourselves. It’s hard because we don’t think we’re perfect. Our hair isn’t right. We don’t have makeup on. What if we don’t look good?

Girlfriend guess what? These are really just figments of our fears of what beauty means to us when all along strong women and mothers like you have been creating our own standard of beauty. When my children look back on photos of me, I’m almost certain they won’t be thinking of those small details we nitpick and use as excuses everyday. They’ll simply reply, “This is Mama. Oh, and that’s me!”

Why Memories Make the Best Father’s Day Gift | Houston, The Woodlands, and Spring TX Family Photographer

Why Memories Make the Best Father’s Day Gift | Houston, The Woodlands, and Spring TX Family Photographer

All too often than not we focus only on Moms and I can’t help but think how the amazing Dads around the world may feel. I mean sure, there are some kick-butt Moms but Dads are an integral part of the family as well. My husband Pedro and son Jaxon, share such a beautiful relationship with one another and I can’t imagine what our life would be like without him. I’ve been grateful to have a husband who believes in taking part in some of the unconventional duties when it comes to parenting and housework. We share an equal amount of time changing diapers, shooting basketball hoops, and any other activity that Jaxon happens to be interested in at the moment lol.

This Father’s Day you can skip the goofy ties Dad hardly wears, and maybe even tool kit he hardly uses, and give Dad a gift of the thing he loves most —memories with his family. Maybe Dad works a lot and you’ve been meaning to get some new canvases for your walls? Or maybe he’s a stay at home Dad who hardly has photos of himself? Maybe you’re like some families and Dad doesn’t have professional photos of himself and the kids at all. I think it’s important that you not only document your family’s life, but have printed artwork and professional quality prints to reflect just how special your family truly is.  Make this Father’s Day one to remember and book the special Dad in your life a Father’s Day portrait session in Houston, TX.

Yes, I know what you’re probably thinking, “But he hates getting his photo taken”. And that’s most likely true, but let Dad know the photo session doesn’t have to last up to an hour, and the beautiful artwork he’ll receive will be completely worth it in the end! What’s even better is I try my best to make all sessions fun and relaxing. I believe in photographing the candid and authentic moments of you and your family, not just posed photos with in-genuine smiles.

Wanting to surprise Dad with finished artwork instead? Not a problem at all! You can book a photo session in The Woodlands or Houston, TX of just the littles and have them deliver Dad’s gift with love. You’ll even have the opportunity to purchase limited edition products like mini accordion albums and wooden blocks.

By the way, Father’s Day is June 18, 2017 this year! Make sure to call and schedule your pre-session consultation today to have Dad’s gift in time. Whatever you do decide to do, just know I’ll be there every step of the way. Read more about the Melo and Me Experience here.

5 ways to capture better memories this summer! | The Woodlands, TX Family and Child Photographer

School’s out and if you’re anything like my family your gearing up for your family’s summer vacation. Depending on how familiar you are with photography and taking photos, I thought I’d share a few tips on how you can capture better memories with your phone or point-and-shoot this summer.

1. Start with golden hour. An hour after sunrise or before sunset is the perfect time to get those shots with the sun as your backdrop, especially at Galveston Island. Chances are the temperature will be a lot cooler than what it’d be mid-day, even if it’s only a 5 degree difference.

2. Do yourself a favor and keep out —the sun that is. You most likely won’t want to be out in direct sun in  Texas heat anyway (lol) but it’s worth noting that photos or selfies taken with the sun directly on you is a sure way to create dark and unflattering shadows on your face and body. However, if you do happen to be out during the middle of the day, find an area with open shade to get nice even light.

3. Enjoy the moment! Every photo doesn’t have to be a posed image of you or your family looking directly at the camera. I’m a believer of living in the moment and taking advantage of the unplanned moments. Candid images are some of the most memorable photos I have of my clients. Enjoy this time of your life and capture both the perfect and imperfect memories — be able to find joy and happiness in every moment.

4. Tell a joke or two. Instead of saying the cliché, “cheese!” tell a joke or two. Photos are so much better when the smiles are authentic.

5. Print your photos! No one likes sorting through tens of thousands of photos on an old laptop. What’s even worse is if the hard drive happens to crash, and you don’t have a backup of Kate’s first trip to Disney. Besides, there’ll be a beautiful and special kind of nostalgia you get when sorting through an old box of prints or album twenty years from now. With the rate smartphones are released, I doubt you’ll have this summer’s memories stored in your new phone. Read more about Why Prints Matter here.

Brittney – Humble High School Senior Pictures | Houston, Humble, Kingwood, Atascocita, Sugarland, Pearland, Tomball, CyFair, Spring, The Woodlands, Conroe, New Caney, Dallas, San Antonio, Galveston, and Austin TX |Senior, Family and Wedding Photographer

The Class of 2017 senior portrait season is beginning to wrap up, and I’m so grateful I was able to photograph Humble High School’s student athlete Brittney. She  traveled to the The Woodlands and Conroe, TX areas for her senior portraits with Melo and Me, and I really had a great time getting to know her and capturing her unique personality!

Brittney’s personality is the perfect heterogenous mixture of goofy, fun, positive, outgoing, and eccentric. She possesses a special aurora about her that reminds me of a modern day Nina Simone, with just a cup full of eclectic style. Brittney is an artist, singer, and a volleyball and track student athlete at Humble High School. Her favorite senior class is art. Are you swooning already?

When asked during the consultation, what favorite colors she likes to wear Brittney said, “Blue is my favorite color, but I like to wear out loud colors like what’d you see in the ’90s.”

What’s on Brittney’s playlist? “Tory Lanez, Erykah Badu, the Internet, Jhene, John Legend, and Drake”, just to name a few.

Brittney will be attending the University of North Texas in the Fall of 2017, as a Broadcast/Journalism major. She wants to be a Sportscaster on a major television network in the future.

Did you enjoy reading and viewing Brittney’s senior pictures as much as I did?  Leave a comment or share Brittney’s session on social media.
