5 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer

Are you looking for the perfect photographer? The search for the wedding photographer that’s the right fit for you can sometimes be difficult. As with other wedding venues, you want to make sure you choose someone who is able to deliver quality service. On the other hand, photographers are a lot different from other vendors with the exception of wedding planners and day of coordinators. Here’s why, we’re with you the entire day, from start to finish. It’s important that the photography company you choose provides with exceptional customer service, photographs, AND “gets” you.

Having a hard time choosing through the many thousands of photographers? One of the best ways to help you narrow down your search and find the photographer of your dreams is to ask your potential wedding photographer questions.

5 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer

In fact, I feel this is the perfect resource to help you confirm you’re making the best decision on your wedding day.

1. “How would you describe your style?”

After a quick internet search, you’ll soon realize that there’s tons of photography lingo and ‘styles’ so to speak. It’s important to find a photographer whose work resonates with you. You’re likely to encounter a plethora of different photographers and styles alike. For instance: light and airy, classic (with colors and tones as you see them), dark and moody, and photojournalistic (storytelling) are just a few. Some photographers may provide a variety of styles while others may only provide clients with one option.

I’d describe our wedding style as vibrant and timeless with hints of contrast and mood. Your wedding photos will be a mix of natural and traditional posing, and photojournalistic/candid images. However, as a visual artist, I’d say we primarily focus on storytelling.

2. “Will you edit my images, and if so what does it include?”

Some photographers will photograph your wedding day and then provide you with the SD card to worry about culling and editing the images yourselves. However, other photographers like me, will edit, cull, and do basic processing of your images before providing them to you.  If you’re wanting to remove large objects or a visible tattoo in more than 100 photographs, you will most likely incur an additional fee to cover the photographer’s time,  expertise, and possible outsourcing.

Your images will receive basic processing and enhancements which includes: Culling (Sorting and organizing your images to provide you with the very best photos. This includes removing the blinks, outtakes and images you’re guaranteed to not want to see.), color-corrections, cropping, black and white conversions, and white balance.

3. “What collections are available and what is included?”

You’ll definitely want to know what your wedding collection includes, that way there are no issues on or after your wedding day. What happens when your photographer arrives to capture your event, and they leave after 4 hours but you thought all day coverage was included.

It may seem like a no-brainer, but a lot of couples are afraid ask questions in fear of offending the business owner. When in doubt, ask. Trust me, no professional  should be offended by questions in the wedding industry (and photography) because we’ve seen it all. Remember this is your day and you have every right to get as many details as possible.

The number of hours in coverage varies and all of our products such as albums, wall art and portrait sessions are a la carte. With that being said, each of our wedding collections include:

  • continuous coverage
  • digital files,  and a print release to print your photos wherever you’d like.

*Finally, as a word of caution, if the deal seems too good to be true, it may be. It never hurts to conduct some research of your own. Too many red flags is always a bad sign.

4. “Do you have a list of certain images you take? Can we create our own list?”

First off, many pofessional wedding photographers will never walk into your wedding day unprepared. You’ll most likely need to complete a Pre-Wedding Questionnaire that includes a shot or image list for you to complete usually a few weeks or even months before your wedding.

It’s common for some couples to leave all of the trust with their photographer. I try my best to capture every image we’ll need to tell your love story from beginning to end. Equally important though, is your input on shots that you would like to place the most priority on. You should also make sure to include the names and relationship details of close guests. For example, divorced and remarried parents who don’t speak, or your 90 year old grandmother who flew in from out-of-state.

Our recommended shot or image list would include these items:

  • Pre-ceremony (getting ready, details),
  • ceremony (walking down the aisle),
  • formals (family, group, partners),
  • reception (first dance, cake-cutting, guests).

Although not all weddings might have a reception or mother-son dance, this is our general shot list. Furthermore, you are always more than welcome to create and provide us with your own list.

5. “How long after the wedding will my images be ready to view, and how will they be delivered?

Soon after your wedding day, you’ll be extremely anxious to view all your images from the big day. I mean seriously, who wouldn’t? Even in such a digital age of social media where many guests will share their cell phone shots on Facebook or Instagram, there’s nothing like gorgeous photos from an experienced professional.

With that being said, turnaround time expectations on wedding images has to be one the most common issue I’ve seen brides have. Some photographers may deliver your photos via an online gallery, CD, or USB within 6-8  weeks. On the other hand, you could possibly expect your wedding photographer to deliver your images within 12-18 weeks. Because turnaround times vary per photographer, it’s important for you to review your contract prior to booking or ask your desired wedding photographer beforehand.

Currently, our turnaround time for having your images ready is between 6-8 weeks. To help curb the anxiety and go weeks without viewing any of your images, we’ll post a few sneak peeks for you. Although it may be rare, if additional time is needed to edit and deliver your wedding images, we will let you know.

What’s more, all of your images will be edited (cropped, color corrected, with some black and white conversions) and delivered via an online gallery. From your gallery, you will also be able to download your images and print release to print them at any lab of your choosing. In addition, should you, your family or friends decide to purchase an heirloom quality album or wall art, you may do so directly through the gallery.

5 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer in Closing

  2. if your images will be edited,
  3. collection or package information and what’s included

The Ultimate, All-in-One Wedding Emergency Kit You’ll Ever Need

Imagine this, you’re getting ready at a venue miles away from your home and realize you left your deodorant. Then your bridesmaids need extra bobby pins. Suddenly, there’s a tear in your wedding dress or tux. What now? Do you ball your eyes out, because you feel like what’s supposed to be your BEST day is turning into your worse? Although there’s a pretty big chance you’ll ruin your makeup and walk down the aisle with puffy eyes if you do. There is another way though and I’m totally not trying to freak you out, but accidents happen. Instead of going into your wedding day unprepared, you can walk in confidently expecting the unexpected.

But how? A wedding day emergency kit.

The Ultimate, All-in-One Wedding Emergency Kit

We’ve seen the emergency kit lists around the web and circling Pinterest, but this list here comes not only from experience but from the heart. It’s a “no holding back” list that brings up nearly every possible situation that could go wrong on your wedding day. Let’s just hope and pray you won’t need everything on this list. With that being said, should you feel it isn’t necessary to keep the unused items, feel free to return them.

In addition, I’ve placed each item into a category and ranked them from most to least important (in my opinion) to better help you. Without further ado, let’s get started.

Beauty

  • Bobby pins – Ummm…do we need even need to explain why?
  • Blotching paper and/or Kleenex for your makeup.
  • Feminine products – pads, tampons, your preference.
  • 911 wax strips or razor with shaving cream.
  • Hair ties! Bring a whole set, because this is like the number one misplaced item in every one of my friends’ homes.
  • Perfume
  • Moisturizer or lotion
  • Lip balm or chapstick, because you need to moisturize those lips, Honey.
  • Nail clippers for an accidental hangnail.

Are you having a summer or Texas wedding? Then the items below are emergency kit must haves:

  • Sunscreen
  • “Crotch” perfume, you know that Summer’s Eve stuff because on your wedding day you sweat in places you normally wouldn’t lol.

Wardrobe

  • Scissors
  • Tape (clear and dutch)
  • Sewing kit
  • Safety pins
  • Shoe cleaner for scruffs
  • Tide pen for stains, of course.
  • Lint roller
  • Dress tape
  • Clear nail polish – this works great for stocking runs!

Hygiene

  • Feminine products – pads, tampons, your preference. *yep, they’re on here again
  • Deodorant, specifically the clear color. It won’t leave a white stain on the suit.
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Breath mints
  • Deodorant wipes or body wipes – to wipe away sweat in extra places and keep your wardrobe (and hygiene) tidy.

Health or Medical

  • Mini first-aid kit
  • Feminine products – pads, tampons, your preference. 3 times the charm right?
  • Tylenol
  • Gas X or Pepto
  • Tums
  • Extra contacts or eye drops
  • Snacks because you WILL get hungry!
  • Water – you’ve got to stay hydrated, Sis.

Intangibles

  • Patience
  • Love
  • Kindness

Final Words

In closing, thank you for taking the time to check out this all-in-one emergency kit.  As a wedding photographer, I generally bring many of these items with me to weddings as an added courtesy. I want my couples to have more time to focus on the moment and celebration.

Finally, I’d like to thank you for considering me to capture your day. I hope you found this emergency kit helpful and more inclusive. If you have any other items you’d like to add, I’d love to hear them. Please know that if you have any questions at all, please reach out. I’m here to help!

Congrats on your engagement. Talk soon!

If you found this blog post useful, please feel free to share with couples who are getting married. I’d love to help out as many couples as possible. Thanks again!

Hawthorne Family Session in Jasper, Tx | Houston, Kingwood, Sugarland, Pearland, The Woodlands, Spring, Conroe, Jasper, Beaumont, Cleveland, New Caney, Humble, TX Senior, Family, and Wedding Photographer

I was ecstatic when Erica contacted me about booking a sibling session of her children. Erica and I first met a few years back, when I was in high school. She and a few other amazing women ran the JHS Basketball Booster Club. My baby sister and her daughter, Amiah are great friends and her son, Amaud is a character (he seriously needs to go into acting). Amiah’s into sports, fashion, and dancing while Amaud is a country cowboy at heart.

I appreciated Erica’s trust in allowing me to capture her children’s personalities. Erica has her own business of chocolate-covered strawberries, and her professional practices reflect as a customer and entrepreneur. It’s always a breath of fresh air to book clients who value your work, and know what it takes to run a business as a mom and wife.

The first part of the children’s session took place in a popular area in Downtown Jasper, Texas. We started the session off with a few ‘safe’ poses, to help build trust and comfortability (because we all know how awkward it can be to have professional photos taken).

After Amiah’s photos, the sun was beginning to set more so we hurried off to finish their session on a private farm a few minutes away. The timing was perfect because the cows and horses were out grazing! Amaud was definitely in his comfort zone now!  By the end of the session, I could tell they were definitely have a good time. It was a pleasure photographing the Hawthorne family [sibling].
