7 Ways to Prepare for Your Fall Session

Autumn is one of the most popular months of the year for portrait sessions. After all, nature is doing its thing with the most beautiful, vibrant colors. And if you’re in Texas like us, you’re excited to get some cooler weather and change up your wardrobe a bit. Here are 7 ways you can prepare for your autumn (or fall) session.

1. Accessorize and Texturize.

First things first, accessorize. Accessories are the easiest way to get into the season and play up your wardrobe. For example, leather boots or booties, cable knit scarves and comfy cardigans or sweaters. We always say “accessorize and texturize” since textures add depth to your images and accessories really bring portraits to life. Tip: neutrals are a great safe color and do well against foliage.

2. Timing is everything.

Just as we mentioned in our summer prep post, timing is literally everything. Start paying attention to that shift in weather as summer melts into fall. In southeast Texas, we’re lucky if we can get up to 2 weeks of colors.

Each day leading up to daylight savings, we’ll lose a bit of light. This is especially important during falls months since time change is normally the first or second (depending on how you count it) week of November. That light makes a huge difference as golden hour will be between 4pm-5pm, when most Americans are still working.

If someone in your family works a 8/9-5 job, you’ll want to either:

a) book September to mid October, or
b) book a weekend date where you can make it to the session during golden hour.

3. Nail down your location.

Beautiful portraits can be created in the studio or outdoors on location.

If you prefer cooler weather, nature and enjoy being outside, or if you have a larger family (5+), you’ll benefit from a full session on-location. A state forest, local park with bridges, neighborhood pond, or an open field would be a beautiful background for your autumn portraits.

On the other hand, if you’d like something a bit more classic, a minimal backdrop, prefer a temperature-controlled environment, then the studio may be better.

Tip: Some locations require a fee to shoot there. Make sure you include this fee when budgeting a session for a must-have location.

4. Golden Hour

Golden hour is when the light falls just right. You end up with no or minimal shadows and nice, even light. This also during the time where the sun begins to set and we can get a nice sunflare.

Plan for an early morning or early-evening session, when the light is just gorgeous. The days are shorter in the fall, so we need to plan accordingly to get that golden hour light.

*Hack: Book your session before the month of October or months in advance. Schedules are extremely tight during fall since everyone wants a fall session.

5. Pack the necessities.

It can get chilly in autumn, especially during golden hour. With that being said, you may want to bring some necessities on hand.

Some of our go-to recommendations are:

  • lip balm,
  • moisturizer,
  • sanitizer (because you, know covid-19),
  • tissues, and of course,
  • warm apparel and accessories.

6. Make sure everyone’s comfortable.

This one should really be at the top of the list.

Wear comfortable shoes and accessories. I seriously can’t stress this enough no matter how many times I have to say it.

Since we’re going to be outside, we’ll probably do lots of walking. If those boots look amazing, but kill your feet, leave them in the car, Sis…please. Or better yet, wear them a few weeks before your session to break them in.

If the scarf looks adorable on your little one, but scratches his face and makes him unhappy, it’s better to leave it off.

When you or your little ones are uncomfortable, it shows. No matter how much you may try to force those smiles and push through the pain, I promise you you’ll be able to tell in the images (and so will everyone else).

7. Have fun.

Play in the environment.

There may be leaves, grass, or other outdoor elements at your session.

Remember that fall family sessions are about capturing you bonding with your family. It’s okay to have fun, let loose, and get into the season.

I’ve never met a kid who was upset with their parents for letting them have too much fun at the session :).

*Tip: Try not to stress the kiddos out. It’s a big deal to them to and they may need a little grace on session day.

Closing 7 Ways to Prepare for Your Fall Session

That wraps up the 7 ways to prepare for your fall session. I hope you got some great tips on how to prepare, even if it was just one. As a traveling family and child portrait photographer, I help people like you display professional photos of their families in their homes with wall art and albums.

What to wear to a summer session + why you should book one.

“It’s getting hot [out] here!” – Nelly + Niesha

It’s starting to heat up here in Southeast Texas (like 11 months out of the year lol).

There are like a million different blog posts and guides on how to prepare for family sessions but nothing on what to wear to summer sessions.

Self explanatory? Maybe.

It can easily get to 100℉ or higher here in Texas, but during the early morning hours and late evenings I loooove the temp. Or course add in humidity and it immediately feels like 5 degrees warmer.

Today I’m sharing what to wear to a SUMMER session AND why you should book one.

What to wear to a summer session?

Clothes  – Wear light fabrics that let you breathe, but still look great. As always, coordinate colors instead of matching.

  • Girls: Jumpsuits, rompers, shorts & a tank top, dresses. It’s OK to show some skin 🙂
  • Guys: Have some fun with your shorts. Salmon and tan colors work as well as other light colors. Pair it with a nice top with 2-3 colors.

Shoes – Choose shoes that are comfortable and summery. Flip flops, loafers, open-toed pumps, even sweet sneakers on your kiddos.

Props – Summer is in season and that means props are too. Consider bringing a beach ball, in-season flower, balloons, giant lollipop or messy ice cream cone that complements your session theme or outfit to make things fun.

Accessorize – Add a sun hat or some shades for an extra flare.

Your smile – One of our favorite things to see, so make sure you wear this one.

Reasons to book a summer session.

More Light = More Time

During the summer months we have more daylight hours. All on-location or outdoor sessions take place an hour to an hour and a half after sunrise (8 – 9:00am) or an hour before sunset (usually between 6:30 – 8:00pm).

This is when that beautiful, soft even light comes into play. We don’t shoot during the day unless it’s a wedding or a marathon even. In those cases we find shade when we can.

During the fall, winter, and most of spring, Daylight Savings ends and it gets dark as early as 6:00pm. Which means we’d be shooting at around 4:30-5:00pm or so. Not exactly ideal for our working families.

We can take our time instead of racing to beat the sun (or moonlight).

Schedule Availability

Another pro to having more light is the availability -for you and me. During the summer months school is out and there’s more time to spend with your family and friends. That also means the schedules a little less tighter than usual. Plus, you’re beating the fall rush and ensuring you have a date on the calendar. You have a much better chance at getting everyone together as a family or making time for senior photos during the summer.

No sold out stores or inconvenient shopping.

Wardrobe – Add in the ability to shop without bumping into the person next to you and it’s really golden. Stores are a lot less busy and you can usually find what you’re needing when it comes to accessories and wardrobe. Hardly anything, except swimsuits and sandals, are sold out during the summer.

Activities + Session Types.

This should be a no-brainer but there’s literally countless session themes or types you can do during the summer months. You can almost find any reason or activity to book a summer session for.

Wanna go to the beach or lake? Have at it. It’s summer. Make a trip out of it and book your session after you’ve had some fun in the sun.

Still think it’s too hot. Schedule an in-home studio session in a temperature controlled environment or cool down ice cream or “sweet treats” session at one of our local creameries or bakeries.

That’s a wrap.

I hope you guys enjoyed today’s blog post on what to wear to a summer session and reasons to book one. I really think summer sessions are overrated. There’s tons to work with and I truly believe the pros outweigh the cons. Which the only con I can even think of is the heat. Then again, I am totally against taking winter photos outdoors and start to shiver if it drops below 60 ℉.

Loving Day + What it Means to Us

Personal Photos \\ Photography by K. Nicole

How it all began.

More than ten years ago, Pedro and I met in our small hometown of Jasper, Texas. A place most known for the despicable dragging of a black man, James Byrd Jr., by a group of White Supremacists. It possesses a heightened climate of racism and tensions between ethnic groups.

With that being said, today, now more than ever, I am appreciative of the fight against social injustices and racial prejudices in America.

If you’d asked us then if our love and marriage that began during the halls, gyms, and classrooms would supersede that of a town filled with such a strong history of hatred and racism -we wouldn’t have been able to answer that question ourselves. Even in 2009, the joining of cultures and ethnicities were viewed as a social abnormality in a place like Jasper.

Lovingin 2020.

Yet, here we are today, defying those social norms and choosing to love one another…as it should be.

There is no one else to thank, other than God –and the Lovings.

Loving v. Virginia (1967)

Today, 53 years after Loving v. Virginia, Pedro and I celebrate what it means to be intertwined as one within the multiethnic community –linking cultures and ethnicities through love and courage.

Because of Richard and Mildred Loving, we are able to love one another, unapologetically, without fault…and for that I am eternally grateful.

Feature Friday: Heirloom Albums

Today’s Feature Friday is: Albums, Albums, Albums!

Heirloom Albums to be specific.

Our heirloom quality album is definitely a product you and your family will rave about and proudly display. In fact, it’s such a big hit with me and my family, that it’s always at the top of my recommendations!

You and your loved ones are so special and unique, and the heirloom album is seriously one of the best ways to show that.

An album is definitely one of those products you have to see, touch, and feel. We call them heirloom albums because they have the potential to literally last a lifetime. Don’t believe me? Read on.

Heirloom Quality

The heirloom album has a standard archival value of 100 years on home display. However, if you store your album in a cool, dry place in dark room storage, it has an archival value of at least 200 years.

Personalized options

You have the option to cover your album in beautiful, genuine Italian full grain leather or linen made of classic textile blend. The leather covers on the heirloom album are moisture resistant leathers that age beautifully with a rich patina, and come in various, classic colors. Some of your color options are: black, navy blue, walnut brown, and ash gray. Either way, we’ll make sure the cover and images both have a cohesive look.

In addition, you can choose between three paper textures. Boast a vibrant and glossy texture with fujifilm or our signature paper. On the other hand, you can opt for a soft, classic felt texture with rich color. All of your pages will feature pure white and sharp quality. Your album will be the perfect way to not only tell and share your story but also display it.

Storybook Pages

Your pages will be acid free, elemental chlorine free, and made of 30% recycled content depending on the texture you choose. We hate those flimsy, thin pages. Finally, your album will feature thick pages to give you extra assurance and stability.

How to care for your album?

You should store all albums in a temperature-controlled and humidity-controlled environment to keep them looking their best.

To remove fingerprints, use a soft cloth making sure to avoid solvents or water which could cause damage.

Carefully apply a simple leather conditioner to your genuine leather album cover, to remove any scratches or scuffs that occur. In closing, the weight, leather, beautiful prints, custom design, and debasing of this album make it the perfect luxury item to display your family’s most precious memories.

Alrighty guys, this concludes our Feature Friday: Heirloom Albums post!

What do you think of this timeless album? Feel free to leave me a comment below.

Are you ready to take the first step in booking a portrait session or wedding? Get in touch now!

10 Stress-Free Family & Child Session Tips

Whew chile, where do we even begin? I actually had to take a deep breath before writing this, because I KNOW just how stressful planning for picture day can be. *Cues all of the times I had to get ready for my own family’s picture day (or any picture day for that...

What To Wear: Family Style Guide

I truly believe that photographs should capture the essence of you and your family’s personality at the very least. I want to help you and your family receive authentic, timeless, and classic wall art and family heirlooms and styling is one way we can work together to achieve that!

I’ve listed 8 great styling tips to get great family photos in the “What to Wear: Family Style Guide“ below:

1. Coordination is key. Coordination and not matching is key. I know, I know. You haven’t had professional family portraits taken in over a decade (or maybe you have). Either way, matching is out and coordinating is in! You no longer have to dress your children in identical outfits or colors and hang that cheesy family portrait in your living room.

2. Choose a color palette. So if we’re coordinating, where do we start? I recommend you choose a color palette. Colors in your home are great places to start, though I’m not certain I’d recommend Pepto Bismol Pink (LOL). Fluorescent colors such as whites, tend to color cast and can sometimes reflect rather harshly. I recommend incorporating one of the primary colors like: yellow (mustard), red (maroon, brick), and blue (navy, royal) and two secondary colors into your palette. If you’re stuck and don’t know where to begin, reach out to your photographer for assistance.

3. Dress comfortably and for the weather. Sounds like a no-brainer right? Right. But we sometimes make the mistake in dressing ourselves or our children in uncomfortable clothes for certain events. Just think about that beautiful evening or wedding gown you wore to your Prom or wedding. Dressing members of your family in shorts during winter or a sweater in the heat of the summer isn’t ideal. It is our goal to help you feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible. If you are upset or uncomfortable during your session, it will show in your photographs.

4. Start with the female. Often times, the woman of the family will already have her outfit selected. In some circumstances, it may be easier to begin with her wardrobe, and build other members of the family’s outfits around hers.

5. Think solid or plaid colored shirts, but you can get funky if you’re family’s into that too. Clothing with graphics or fairly large logos can take away from the person in the photo. For this reason, I recommend wearing solid or plaid colored shirts.

6. Remember the location. If your session location is in a grassy area or field, I recommend wearing the color green sparingly. Wearing green as a primary color when you’re surrounded by a field of grass, is one way to for you to blend in like camouflage (which is the exact opposite of what we want you to do)! We want you and your family to be the center of attention in your photographs. However, if you’re truly set on wearing the color green, it does make a great accent color.

7. Layers, layers, layers…layers everywhere! I feel like I’m singing the intro to a popular 2000s tune or something. Seriously though, layers add texture and dimension. They’re a great way to help give your photographs that extra oomph!  If you’re not able to add layers, I recommend clothing with texture such as: buttons, ruffles, embroider, flannel, or items with ‘grit’ per se.

8. Accessorize!Accessories can make all the difference in your photographs, especially if you’re feeling like your wardrobe is a bit too bland or basic. If that’s the look you’re going for have at it. Most of the time that’s the look I’m going for. However, if you’re wanting to add a little something different from your normal look, consider accessorizing. Necklaces, boots, bracelets, tights, and scarves oh my! I recommend wearing at least one accessory for females, they can really add interest and spark to your photos. If you’re unsure as to which ones you should, bring them all!

10 Stress-Free Family & Child Session Tips

Whew chile, where do we even begin? I actually had to take a deep breath before writing this, because I KNOW just how stressful planning for picture day can be. *Cues all of the times I had to get ready for my own family’s picture day (or any picture day for that matter).

As with all families, it always seems like something’s bound to go wrong no matter how much you plan. Don’t get derailed and discouraged —HOPE is on the way!

Pedro and I have compiled ten of what we feel are the most important tips to help you and your family take the stress out of family picture day, and better prepare for your photo session.

  1. Plan to arrive to your family session at least 10-15 minutes early.
  2. Don’t forget to feed your child/children before the session (bonus if they’ve had a nap)
  3. Make sure you have a backup outfit for each child just in case,
  4. Don’t change your child/children into their session clothing until after they eat (seeing as though we have two littles of our own, we know how hard this can be)
  5. Only give them clear liquids once they are in their session clothing,
  6. Bring along their favorite toy or blanket, this will help them to feel comfortable during the session (it’s always smart to have a bribe in place such as fruit snacks, candy or a toy)
  7. Have a heart to heart with your child/children about the session and explain what’s going to happen,
  8. Talk to your significant other about the session, how the session will go and discuss what your expectations are,
  9. Outfits: remember to coordinate instead of matching & ensure all outfits are wrinkle-free. We’re not saying you have to starch them, but you can at least throw them in the dryer for a spin,
  10. A few days prior to your session, pack a bag filled with items you will possibly need on picture day: (snacks, props, wipes, hairbrush, emergency items, etc.)

3-for-1 combo BONUS TIP: Relax, have fun, and love on your family <3.
