10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer | Houston and Southeast [SETX] Wedding Photographer

One of the best ways you can find out if your professional wedding photographer is the right one for you, is by asking questions. Often times couples assume that all photographers are alike and run the risk of booking their wedding photographer without all the necessary details. I've compiled a list of the "Top 10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer".

1. "What is your style?" It's important to find out what style the photographer you're looking for has. Photographer styles you may encounter are: light and airy, classic, dark and moody, and dramatic. Some photographers may provide a variety of styles while others may only provide clients with one option.

Our wedding style is classic and timeless. Your wedding day will be a mix of natural and traditional posing, and photojournalistic/candid images, processed with clean, crisp and vibrant photo enhancements.

2. "Will you be the one photographing my wedding?" Many photography studios employ contracted photographers to photograph weddings. It's important to ask if the photographer you're speaking to will be photographing your wedding or not. If not, ask to speak with that photographer or meet them in person to make sure you're a good fit. You don't want to get stuck with a photographer you and your partner don't connect with.

At Melo and Me Photography, I'm the primary photographer, you can read more about me and who I am here. However, some wedding collections will include a contracted second photographer.

3. "What collections are available and what is included?" You'll definitely want to know what your wedding collection includes, that way there are no issues on or after your wedding day. What happens when your photographer arrives to capture your event, and they leave after 4 hours but you thought all day coverage was included. When in doubt, it's always best to ask. *This may be a no-brainer for some, but if you're from a small, rural town like Jasper, it's even more important to ask.

Each MMP collection includes digital files. However, some collections will vary in coverage, albums, and more. Get in touch with me to schedule an in-person meeting or phone chat.

4. "Do you have a list of certain images you take? Can we create our own list?"

Most professional photographers will be prepared and most likely have a questionnaire that includes a shot/image list for you to complete before the big day.

Yes. I always try to tell a story with your images by capturing each and every part of your wedding day from beginning to end. Pre-ceremony (getting ready, details), ceremony (walking down the aisle), formals (family, group, partners), reception (first dance, cake-cutting, guests), are just a few of the images I aim to capture. However, you're more than welcome to create and provide me with your own list.

5. "Will I receive a print release or do I have to print through you?"

Not all photography businesses are the same and each one has its own model, process, and policies. While there is certainly no right or wrong way when it comes to digital files and print releases, it's important to find out whether or not you will be provided with a print release, digital files, and whether you will be need to print and order your photographs through your photographer.

I find that the larger you print, the more the photo has to properly be prepared and quality inspected. Several steps are taken to ensure your wall art will match the colors and tones, sharpness, and professional quality standards. For this reason, all wedding collections include web-sized copies of digital files, while the top collection also includes a print release.

6. "Will you edit my images, and if so what does it include?"

Some photographers will photograph your wedding day and then provide you with the SD card to worry about culling and editing the images yourselves. However, others will edit, cull, and do basic processing of your images before providing them to you.  If you're wanting to remove large objects or a visible tattoo in more than 100 photographs, you will most likely incur an additional fee to cover the photographer's time,  expertise, and possible outsourcing.

Your images will receive basic processing and enhancements which includes: Culling (Sorting and organizing your images to provide you with the very best photos. This includes removing the blinks, outtakes and images you're guaranteed to not want to see.), color-corrections, cropping, black and white conversions, and white balance

8. "If we need you for additional coverage, will you stay longer? If so, how much will it be?"

This is extremely important to ask because some photographers may or may not stay longer to cover the remainder of your event. If some cases, if they do they're coverage fee per hour may be completely unexpected. Most weddings run late, so it's important to discuss this with your desired photographer prior to your wedding day.

Absolutely! I understand how quickly things change on your wedding day, and most if not all with run a little late...it just happens. If I notice we're behind schedule with a large part of your wedding day still not photographed, I'll ask if you'd like me (and my second photographer) to stay longer, which we're more than happy to do at an additional fee per hour. Please contact us to learn more.

9. "How much is the deposit and when is the remaining balance due?"

No one wants to find out that their photographer won't be able to photograph their wedding, because you thought final payment was due  the day of the wedding when it wasn't. Most photographers will still take cash or money order as a form of payment in case this does happen.

A 50% non-refundable deposit with the remaining balance due at least 30 days prior to wedding date, is required to secure your wedding date on the calendar. The deposit is non-refundable due to the business that could be potentially be lost should you and your partner choose to separate or postpone your wedding until further notice.

10. "Are you a licensed photography business? Will a contract of the services be provided and if not, how may we get one?"

It’s likely that if you’re photographer isn’t licensed to do business legally, should legal issues arise you may run the risk of not so pleasant results. A photographer with the necessary licenses and insurance, places their livelihood of their business and reputation on the line. They understand that one poor decision could potentially ruin their entire business and are usually have a higher commitment of someone who may be working "under the table", may not have.

Believe it or not, some successful businesses with extremely happy clients run their businesses everyday without a contract. However, this is not the case with us. I've done business with a number of businesses and I always find that those who don't provide contracts have lots of "gray" areas. I find it helpful for couples and myself to be able to use the contract as a reference on how to protect ourselves in sticky situations. Contracts don't solve everything but they do set a great starting point on what each party can expect from one another.
